Jairam Ramesh blames Harry Potter for owl crisis

New Delhi, November 3, 2010:

Don’t be surprised if Environment and Forest Minister Jairam Ramesh hauls up J K Rowling under India’s Wildlife Protection Act for creating the character of Harry Potter and causing massacre of the Indian owls.

He is quite upset with Harry Potter as he blamed his popularity for India’s dwindling owl population while launching a report on the Indian owls in New Delhi on Tuesday.

He claimed Potter’s featured friend Hedwig was popular in India, leading to an increase in people wanting to buy owls from illegal bird traders. Hedwig was Harry Potter’s pet Snowy Owl and magical familiar.

In the story, she was a gift to Harry on his eleventh birthday from Rubeus Hagrid, in 1991.

The report “Imperilled Custodians of the Night” he was releasing is written by a leading conservation group, TRAFFIC and it calls for tougher measures to protect owls ahead of Diwali, noting that thousands of owls are traditionally sacrificed on “auspicious” occasions.
